Composer Bio
Lucy Hudson is a British flute player and composer living between Shoreham by Sea, England and Kerala,
South India.
Lucy's main focus as a composer is fusion - exploration, experimentation and recombination of the structural and atmospheric elements of different genres, in particular, Jazz and Carnatic music.
Her compositional style is in constant evolution, but the two constant and recognisable traits are a strong and elegant melodic sense and a keen and joyful exploration of rhythmic possibilities. Some of her compositions combine a multitude of musical styles and devices (e.g. Seven Eight 2005, Spanish Dwarf 2006, Construit dans la meme universe 2007, Slaughterhouse of Love, 2008,) and some pieces spring more directly from a single genre: Western Classical (e.g. Prisms 2005, Reflections 2006) Jazz (e.g. Sunday Blues, 2007, Laminations, 2006) Hip hop (e.g. Jerusalem, 2006) Carnatic (e.g. Happiness 2008, Nadi, Ganga, 2009) Latin (Four by Four, 2003, Tango 2006).
During 2007-2008 Lucy spent 4 months in Kerala, studying Carnatic melody and rhythm. The result of this was a CD of vocal music and the establishment of strong and lasting relationships with her teachers and other Indian musicians. She also met Leah Barclay, the Australian composer and in late 2008 they returned to Kerala to work on a collaborative fusion project (Aranmula, CD available). The musical relationships they had formed during their first visit to India deepened through work on Aranmula and a series of performances in temples across Kerala, leading to the formation of Nada Laya, a collective of musicians from India, Austalia, England and France (Nada Laya, CD available).
Lucy spent most of 2010 in Kerala studying with her teachers, performing, teaching, working on her carnatic music book and organising the study and residence of other foriegn musicians
in Kerala. She is currently back in England, teaching carnatic flute and vocals from her home
in Shoreham by Sea.
